SBT Reading Tutors Opens July Reading Intervention Sprint for Grades 5-7 as Summer Reading Loss Threatens School-Year Readiness

SBT Reading Tutors LLC, a nationwide online reading and writing tutoring service for students in grades 1 through 8, today announced the opening of its July Reading Intervention Sprint, a two-week program running July 6 through 17 for students in grades 5 through 7 who are at risk of losing reading progress over summer break. Enrollment for the July session closes July 3, after which remaining interest will move to a waiting list.

Reading loss during summer break is a well-documented concern among educators. Research on summer learning shows that students who are already behind grade level in reading can lose one to three months of reading progress over an extended break, with the loss compounding for students who entered the summer already struggling. For students in grades 5 through 7, the stakes are particularly high: reading comprehension by this stage underlies performance across nearly every academic subject, from math word problems to science and history coursework.

“By fifth, sixth, and seventh grade, a reading gap doesn’t stay contained to reading class,” said Jacqueline Thompson, Ed.S., founder of SBT Reading Tutors and a certified teacher with 30 years of classroom experience across New York City, Westchester County, and Georgia. “It shows up in every subject that requires a student to read and understand what’s in front of them. Summer is the window where families can close that gap before it follows their child into the new school year.”

The July Reading Intervention Sprint runs Monday through Friday in 45-minute sessions, for ten total sessions over two weeks. Each group is capped at five students, a structure designed to keep instruction personalized while maintaining the peer interaction that supports student engagement. Every session is led by a state-certified teacher trained directly by Thompson in Science of Reading methodology, an evidence-based approach to teaching phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

SBT Reading Tutors’ enrollment process begins with a short online inquiry form, reviewed individually by a member of the SBT team rather than processed automatically. Families are matched to a group based on grade level and specific need, with payment collected only after group fit is confirmed. The company reports that grandparents represent a meaningful share of inquiries, often taking the lead in arranging summer academic support on behalf of a grandchild.

Enrollment for the July session is capped by group availability and closes July 3, 2026. After that date, additional inquiries will be added to a waiting list rather than guaranteed a seat in the current session.
